Summer in Tokyo is hot and very humid. If you are traveling Japan during the summer months, you might not be able to avoid sweating and even getting a sunburn. But you can definitely do some activities that let you forget about the high temperatures. There are even some things, that you can only do in summer. So, here is my list of 5 activities that you should try to do when visiting Tokyo in the summertime!
1. Feel the wind! – Go on a cruise!
There is a “water bus” company in Tokyo with multiple routes. From “Hinode Pier” located near JR Hamamatsucho Station, you can go all the way up Sumida River to Asakusa. When you go to Asakusa, the ship will pass a lot of bridges and guests have to stay indoors for most of the ride. But if you do the short ride to Odaiba, guests are allowed to go on the deck of the boat. Feel the cooling wind with your whole body. Ahhhh, this is great!

2. Cool down with some cold sweets!
Do you know any popular Japanese “summer sweets”? In Japan, eating “kakigōri” – shaved ice dessert – is a MUST during the summer months. Do you have shaved ice in your country? If so, do you also have shaved ice with vegetables as a topping? There is a shop in Tokyo that sells amazing veggie kakigōri.
At “Azabuyasaigashi” in Azabu-juban, they have shaved ice with Physalis alkekengi (bladder cherry), avocado, mini tomatoes, eggplants and adzuki beans as a topping. This year, they even added “brown sugar and ginger” as a new topping to their menu. So what does it taste like? … Well, I am looking forward to eating it again!

3. Let’s go sightseeing – by bicycle!
There is a bicycle sharing service in the Minato ward in Tokyo. If you register at one of the registering terminals, you can rent a motor-assisted bicycle at 150 yen for 30 minutes. There is also a one day ticket for 1500 yen. Bike stations are at many places throughout the city. When you want to return your bike, you don’t have to go all the way back to the station you rented your bicycle. Just drop it at one of the other ones. The great merit of doing sightseeing by bicycle is that you don’t have to wait for trains and buses. You can look at the city while going exactly where you want to. This is a great way to discover those hidden gems in the backstreets. And above all, feeling the wind on your body is very refreshing!

4. Visit a Japanese summer festival!
In July and August, there are lots of summer festivals in Tokyo. Japanese summer festivals are exactly like the ones you might have seen in anime and manga. The famous “Azabu-Juban Festival” is a classic! It’s a typical summer festival, just 50 times bigger. There are looooots of things to see.
Food booths with delicious foods are lined up everywhere in the Azabu-Juban shopping area. For children, there are booths where you can play games, such as “yo-yo fishing”, “goldfish scooping”, “shooting games”, and so on.
When you visit a Japanese summer festival, wearing a yukata or a jinbei makes it even more fun! Since yukatas are sold at department and clothing stores everywhere, it’s easy to find one. Also, a yukata can make a nice souvenir, too.
Summer festivals are a lot of fun and you’ll completely forget about the heat.

5. Wait until sunset! – Visit a rooftop beer garden!
How about a cold beer and Japanese BBQ at a rooftop beer garden with your family and friends? The night view of Tokyo seen from “Roppongi Beer Garden” at the ROA building in Roppongi is fantastic. You can even see Tokyo Tower. This is an activity that is fully reserved for those hot summer nights – just another reason to go there RIGHT NOW!^^
