Cherry blossom season in Japan is very popular not only among Japanese but also among tourists. You have only about 10 days to enjoy the beautiful sight since this is the time it takes the pale pink cherry blossoms to bloom and fall like snow down on the ground. So if you are traveling to Japan during the cherry blossom season, you want to use the limited time wisely. There are many spots in Tokyo where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms (sakura) from morning till evening. These are our favorite spots!
As the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, locals are looking forward to having a “cherry blossom viewing” (hanami) picnic. You will see are a lot of people who sit on blue plastic sheets from the early morning to reserve the best spots under the trees. A popular place for picnicking is Shibakoen (Shiba Park) near Tokyo Tower. For beautiful pictures of Tokyo Tower or a traditional temple together with cherry blossoms, Zojoji Temple – which is right next to the park – is the place to go!
Of course, there are a lot of other nice shrines and temples.
Atago Shrine on a small natural mountain is also great. The cherry blossoms floating on the pond in the precincts are very cute and the whole area isn’t as crowded as other places.
If you are hungry, buy a box lunch and eat it inside the Kyu-Shiba-Rikyu Gardens! You do not have to buy a plastic sheet: they have benches where you can enjoy your lunch while looking at the cherry blossoms all around you.
At night, you have to visit the park area behind Tokyo Midtown where cherry blossoms are lighted up at night! The fantastic atmosphere of cherry blossoms is very romantic. It’s the perfect place for a date!
