Discovering Tokyo’s Little Italy: Buying takeout in Shiodome

Did you know that Tokyo has an Italian Town? Unlike the Korea town of Shin-Okubo and Yokohama’s Chinatown, Tokyo’s Little Italy near Shiodome Station isn’t a neighborhood where many Italians live. So what kind of place is it? And what is the secret behind the popularity of Italian Town? Let’s go on a trip to Tokyo’s Little Italy together, and buy some delicious takeaway gourmet food!

Italian Town at Shiodome

Italian Town is part of an urban redevelopment area of Shiodome. When deciding about the atmosphere. or vibe, of the new area, the planners decided to incorporate elements of Italian architectural design. By doing so, the team tried to create a bright, warm and fashionable neighborhood that generates interaction, in contrast to the more cold business district surrounding the area.

Nowadays, Italian Town is often used as a backdrop for magazines and tv dramas. Many young people also visit the neighborhood to take some instagrammable pictures, without traveling abroad.

Strolling around Italian Town

Lush roadside trees and fashionable cobblestone roads everywhere…

Italian Town is located in the Shiodome area, between JR Shimbashi Station and JR Hamamatsucho Station. When visiting, the best way to get there is to rely on a map app on your phone such as Google Maps.

The architecture of Italian Town is reminiscent of European architecture in general ー without looking like a specific region or country. Look at the decorations or embellishing pillars on the buildings and the colors! That’s really typical European!

Is this really Japan?!

Old-fashioned street lights

Right in the center of Italian Town, there is a triangular square: Shiodome Nishi Koen Park.

When I visited, a fun-looking food truck event was held at the park (February 15-19, 2021). The park is often used for open-air events.

Business people from nearby companies looking around and deciding which takeaway lunch they should go for.

There was also a food truck selling Italian food – the perfect match for Italian Town.

1/f Coffee Place: This is as Italian as it gets!

If you really want to enjoy the Italian atmosphere to its fullest, I recommend 1/f Coffee Place. The cafe offers a special coffee which is said to be the pinnacle of coffee beans. In addition to the drink menu, the cafe also offers toast, various lunch options, and homemade sweets. In short, it’s the perfect place for a coffee break.

A baked apple, or Rombosse, topped with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.

You can also order coffee for takeout.

The best way to discover Italian Town is, of course, with a cup of hot coffee in your hand! So don’t miss this nice cafe!

Live Hayama Deli: Healthy bento lunch

The most popular lunchbox shop in Italia Street is called Live Hayama Deli. Here you can buy healthy bento boxes made using brown rice. It is not only popular because of its reasonable pricing, but also for the delicious homemade taste!

The shop menu

The shop owner told me that ‘Saba no Shio-yaki Bento‘ (Grilled mackerel with salt) is especially popular with female customers.

They also sell brown rice inside the store.

The juicy salted chicken lunch box is the shop’s No. 1!

FIRE HOUSE DELIVERY SERVICE: Super lux hamburgers!

The popular hamburger shop FIREHOUSE DELIVERY SERVICE specializes in deliveries, so there is no eat-in space. However, you can order takeout ー so that’s what I did!

Their voluminous hamburgers use buns made with natural yeast. With a lot of options, the menu has something for everyone. Even for people who might like baked apples on the burgers! The savory and satisfying hamburgers are very delicious and a place you should definitely shouldn’t miss if you like burgers.

I was born and raised in Kiel/Germany. When I was 16 I came to Japan for the first time. I fell in love with this beautiful country, so I returned after my university graduation. Since then, I have been living in Tokyo - and I don't plan to change anything about that ;-) My hobbies are taking a stroll around the city, taking photos and drinking coffee.
