Local gourmet food from all over Japan in Tokyo

Bussanten

When traveling in Japan, you can eat a different delicious meal or local specialty every day. Japan is a gastronomic wonderland. Besides the internationally known healthy washoku (= “Japanese food”), there are many local “soul foods” all over Japan that you shouldn’t miss out on. There is just one problem: a couple of weeks in Japan won’t be enough to get to know all the dishes. However, if you have limited time or cannot travel outside of Tokyo, that doesn’t mean you won’t have a chance to try the delicious treats.

Shimbashi Station SL Square

Once a year, the “Zenkoku Koryu Bussanten” takes place in front of JR Shimbashi Station at the “SL Square”. “Zenkoku Koryu Bussanten” could perhaps be translated as “National Products and Exchange Fair”. In 2017, the event took place on the 27th and 28th of October. When I left the JR Shimbashi Station at the Hibiya exit, I suddenly couldn’t see anything because of thick smoke. Slowly I fought my way through the white fog. Gradually, many small stalls appeared.

“Zenkoku Koryu Bussanten” brings together shops from all over the country in front of Shibashi Station. They sell local specialties, such as fresh fish and meat, and promote their region. At first, I decided to look at all stalls with my friend Sandra and then buy some food. Crabs and mussels, grilled fish on skewers, beef, chicken, rice wine (sake), fruits, and vegetables … there was a lot of great food!

We chose meatballs made of beef tongue (“gyutan“) from Iwaki (Fukushima Prefecture), Yonezawa Beef Croquettes (Yamagata Prefecture) and for dessert, we had a baked sweet potato from Hokota (Ibaraki Prefecture). Especially the croquette was superb! Speaking of wagyu, “Kobe Beef” is famous worldwide, but you shouldn’t underestimate Yonezawa beef!

Time to dig in!

The Tohoku region’s Yonezawa beef is one of the three best wagyu in Japan and is very popular for its good taste. Many tourists tend to travel to western Japan and visit cities like Kyoto and Hiroshima. That may be one of the reasons why Tohoku (= Northeast Japan) specialties are not yet well-known outside of Japan.

In addition to the SL Square in front of the train station, there is another venue, the Minato City Sakurada Park, which is about a 3-minute walk away. There were even more foods and products from all over Japan.

The highlight was a fun lottery. Whenever you buy something, you will get a ticket. With two tickets you can draw once at the lottery. The great thing about the lottery is: you always win! The woman in front of me got phone straps that looked like sushi, I got a notebook and pen (that’s practical – nice!), and my friend Sandra got an amulet with little frogs. All prizes had been donated by the exhibitors.

In Sakurada Park, I drank hot fruit juice from Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. The fruits were called “bushkan” and tasted like a mixture of tangerines and lemons. The juice was amazingly delicious! I wish I could drink it every day… So, one thing is clear: my next trip will be to Shikoku!

At the “Zenkoku Koryu Bussanten” you get to know local products from all over Japan and taste local gourmet dishes. It’s like traveling all over Japan to places you won’t find in any guidebook. The “Zenkoku Koryu Bussanten” will take place again next fall. If you like, please come to Shinbashi for a gourmet trip!

I was born and raised in Kiel/Germany. When I was 16 I came to Japan for the first time. I fell in love with this beautiful country, so I returned after my university graduation. Since then, I have been living in Tokyo - and I don't plan to change anything about that ;-) My hobbies are taking a stroll around the city, taking photos and drinking coffee.
