Enjoy Japan’s beautiful fall at these cafes with a terrace at Aoyama!

Fall in Tokyo is a beautiful season with many sunny days. It’s perfect weather for spending time outside. Maybe that’s why the Japanese have the expression “appetizing autumn (shokuyoku no aki)”, which holds the meaning that after the hot summer months you regain an appetite for yummy food. Go on a walk in the fashionable Aoyama and Omotesando area and take a break at a terrace café introduced in this articleーhere you can enjoy the “appetizing autumn” at its best!

Brunch all day long!

Minami Aoyama flagship store YOKU MOKU

In Japan, everybody knows the long-established Western confectionery store YOKU MOKU. Their bestselling product is a rolled waffle cookie called Cigare, which was first created in 1969. Covered with deep blue tiles, their impressive flagship store also has a beautiful terrace café you have to check out.

The café has a cute limited autumn menu.

Some dishes are available for takeaway.

The galette and the light meals menu.

In addition to the dessert menu, the café has a wonderful brunch menu. You can order brunch any time throughout the day! Choose from galettes made from Japanese buckwheat flour, fresh bread with sunny-side-up eggs, ham and cheese, or a classic egg benedict. Delicious and healthy!

A galette with bacon, apples (!) and a soft-boiled egg.

Healthy rye bread with gorgonzola and honey mustard sauce – the perfect harmony!

When I ordered food, I received YOKU MOKU’s trademark Cigare together with my order! The rich buttery and almond-scented roll cookies are delightful and go well with their tea.

Like we say in English “there’s always room for dessert”, in Japan, they say “you have another stomach for sweets”. So if you also have a “spare belly”, you should definitely try the seasonal sweets!

Brulee-style pancakes. The surface of the pancakes was ー like crème brûlée ー topped with a layer of caramelized sugar. So when you tap it with a spoon, the caramel layer cracks with a satisfying sound!

Forget the hustle and bustle of the city and instead enjoy a relaxing meal on the terrace at the Blue Brick Lounge in Minami Aoyama!

A campsite in the city?

After a short walk from the Omotesando intersection, you arrive at COMMUNE. COMMUNE is a fun outdoor complex with food stalls, an art gallery, and a farmer’s market. You can enjoy food and drinks purchased at their multiple food trucks in the dining area located in the center of the space. A casual and fun place that feels like being on a campsite ー but in the city!

I was born and raised in Kiel/Germany. When I was 16 I came to Japan for the first time. I fell in love with this beautiful country, so I returned after my university graduation. Since then, I have been living in Tokyo - and I don't plan to change anything about that ;-) My hobbies are taking a stroll around the city, taking photos and drinking coffee.
